Business depends on connections and effective networks. A fast Cambridge Light Rail system would efficiently move large numbers of people to key strategic destinations, including employment hubs, and enhance business connections. In particular, it would improve the links into and out of Cambridge, including from and to London by linking key sites to the rail stations, so more time can be spent engaging in what counts, and not just getting there.
Fast links into the centre will enhance business in the City core. Cambridge Light Rail would deliver vastly improved links to businesses in surrounding employment centres as well. Links between business centres and the University would be improved.
Overall, Cambridge Light Rail would enhance business efficiency and productivity, both by improving speed of access and by reducing congestion on other modes of transport. It is important to remember that for many businesses a van or delivery vehicle is essential, and reductions in overall congestion will make an enormous difference to the speed with which they can carry out their tasks, potentially dramatically reducing their costs. Ultimately, through competition, these cost reductions are passed on to us as consumers – so it is win / win.
Presently, Cambridge workers and employees waste huge amounts of time caught in traffic, pumping up costs for businesses and for all of us. Not only is this unsustainable for the environment, this is also an unsustainable business model.
For business, better connections and improved reliability and efficiency equates to competitive advantage and growth in profitability. In short, Cambridge Light Rail would be great for business!
